Galle Fort is one of the nice-preserved colonial forts in Asia and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It has a romantic appeal thanks to its ramparts, lighthouse, and meandering cobblestone streets. The fort is home to a number of historical landmarks including the island’s oldest breadfruit tree and the National Maritime Museum which features marine artifacts from shipwreck explorations along the southern coast. After that enjoy a peaceful Madu River cruise in Balapitiya where you can visit small islands and see wildlife up close. You can also visit Kosgoda Beache’s turtle hatchery which is dedicated to protecting endangered sea turtles by raising their eggs before releasing them into the ocean. Go to Unawatuna Beach for the day. It’s a serene cove with palm trees all around that’s perfect for relaxing. Witness the unique Weligama stilt fishing tradition where fishermen fish from stilts in shallow waters. Visit the magnificent three-story Kalutara Hollow Dagoba which has murals depicting scenes from the Lord Buddha’s past incarnations. The coastal town of Ambalangoda is located in the south and is only an hour’s drive from Galle. There are a lot of talented people in Sri Lanka’s traditional art and subculture scene. Enjoy a walk through the Ambalangoda Mask Museum which has served as a representation of authenticity for decades.
